This older topic overlaps with the hdparm disk tuning note. It is kept as a short legacy reference because most modern Linux systems should not need manual hard drive output tuning.
Check current storage layout
lsblk
df -h
Check rough read performance
sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sdX
Replace /dev/sdX with the real disk. This is only a quick check, not a complete benchmark.
Modern recommendation
- Use the kernel and distribution defaults unless you have a specific reason.
- Check disk health with SMART tools instead of forcing risky tuning options.
- Prefer SSDs, correct drivers and proper filesystem choices for real performance gains.
- Avoid copying old
hdparmwrite/timing flags into production systems.
