VNC provides remote graphical access to a Linux desktop. The basic idea is still useful, but older VNC setup instructions often assume outdated desktop environments, weak authentication, or direct Internet exposure.
Modern approach
- Use a maintained implementation such as TigerVNC where it is available for your distribution.
- Create a dedicated VNC password and session rather than relying on old system-wide examples.
- Limit access with the firewall.
- Prefer an SSH tunnel or VPN instead of exposing the VNC port directly to the Internet.
ssh -L 5901:localhost:5901 user@serverThe exact service unit and desktop-session configuration varies by distribution, so check the current package documentation before enabling a persistent VNC service.
Security note
Do not treat a VNC password alone as sufficient protection for an Internet-facing service. Restrict the listener and carry the session through SSH or another trusted private network whenever possible.
