On modern Linux systems, the easiest and safest way to install software is usually through the distribution’s package manager. It resolves dependencies, tracks installed files, and makes updates and removal much easier than manual installs.
Debian and Ubuntu
sudo apt update sudo apt install package-name
Fedora and RHEL-family systems
sudo dnf install package-name
Arch Linux
sudo pacman -S package-name
For openSUSE, use zypper. Other distributions have their own package tools.
Prefer repositories first
Repository packages integrate best with the operating system. Use source builds, vendor repositories, Flatpak, Snap, containers, or standalone binaries when the distribution package is unavailable or does not meet the requirement.
Avoid mixing package ecosystems casually, especially on production systems. Keep a clear record of software installed outside the native package manager.
